The bar at Cole’s is a hidden treasure with sharply dressed bartenders who take amazing care in crafting your drink. Their specialty seems to be vintage cocktails, from the Old Fashioned (rye or bourbon) that will make you grow chest hairs to the refreshing Ginger Rogers. I will be back for more drinks (and the grilled cheese sandwich)!

Kabocha squash soup w/ quince { Commis | Oakland }
Although this soup has excellent texture and flavor, what really brought it alive were the quince and fresh herbs (from the chef’s mom’s garden). I want to eat this right now.
If you are in town, have a meal at Commis. Chef James uses ingredients from local farms that follow sustainable and eco friendly practices. Also, his menu changes rather often to reflect the seasons. The one Michelin star is very well deserved.

Intelligentsia Coffee, Venice Beach
My roommate, Phil, works over at the newly opened Intelligentsia Coffee over in Venice Beach. We decided to head over there tonight and the place is like no other coffee shop I’ve ever seen. The majority of the space is used by the baristas and each barista has their own espresso machine. There are bench seats along the walls and a small patio area outside. We tried a roast from Guatemala today and a mocha; they were both really good. Phil and one of the other baristas working were showing me how they make heart designs with the foam; it was fucking amazing.
Intelligentsia is my go-to spot for consistent and quality espressos. I frequent the Silverlake location because it’s closer to home. But if you’re near Intelligentsia Venice, check it out. Very cool space … and there’s parking!
